Schema Therapy is a combination psychotherapy model designed to treat clients with chronic emotional difficulties.
It is based on Cognitive Behavioral Psychotherapy, incorporating elements from other therapeutic approaches such as Attachment Theory, Psychoanalysis, Object Relations Theory and Gestalt.
Schema Therapy, using mainly emotion-focused techniques, attempts to gain a deep understanding of the client's difficulties by tracing their roots back to childhood and early adolescence. At the same time, this understanding helps to create a meaningful therapeutic relationship, which is a key working tool in Schema Therapy.
Schemas are created when basic emotional needs of childhood are not met. They are the result of deficient and toxic experiences and, although they are clearly dysfunctional, they have a strong tendency to persist into adulthood. They are part of a person's identity, they are the way they experience themselves and therefore they are completely familiar and known to them. They make the person dysfunctional but at the same time they are part of their reality, they are "what" they know, and that is why it is very difficult to change them. Schemas significantly determine the way a person thinks, feels, behaves, and relates to others.
Indications for Schema Therapy
Schema Therapy has proven to be particularly effective in people with long-term emotional difficulties, personality disorders, chronic depression, chronic generalized anxiety, couple problems, eating disorders, and in people who have difficulty maintaining satisfactory relationships with others.
Schema Therapy can be a short, medium or long-term therapeutic intervention, depending on the needs and difficulties of the client.
